An AI/ML Engineer will join a multidisciplinary team to advance the U.S. Army’s Holistic Health & Fitness (H2F) initiative by designing and deploying statistical and machine learning models. The work centers on assessing soldier readiness, analyzing performance trends, and identifying injury risk through data-driven insights. Models must be both scientifically sound and operationally useful, developed under government guidance with strong emphasis on transparency and interpretability.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, test, and refine machine learning models tailored to readiness and injury-risk prediction
- Select analytical methods aligned with data properties and mission priorities
- Ensure models are explainable and support informed decision-making
- Validate model outputs under direction from government and scientific leads
- Evaluate model assumptions, performance, and potential biases
- Partner with epidemiologists and research psychologists to align analytics with scientific goals
- Work alongside data engineers to shape features and prepare datasets
- Identify and address data quality issues affecting model accuracy
- Ensure compliance with data governance and approved definitions
- Support integration of model outputs into dashboards and decision-support tools
- Develop reproducible workflows and maintain thorough documentation
- Troubleshoot analytical issues in coordination with technical teams
- Summarize findings and present results clearly to non-technical stakeholders
Qualifications
Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related discipline. Proven experience applying statistical or machine learning methods to real-world datasets is required. Familiarity with data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model validation is essential. Applicants should have experience working with structured and semi-structured data and demonstrate strong collaboration skills across analytics, research, and software development domains. The ability to obtain and retain a Secret security clearance is mandatory.
Preferred Experience
- Background in health, human performance, or readiness analytics
- Experience embedding analytical outputs into dashboards or operational systems
- Collaboration with data engineering or software development teams
- Prior work supporting Department of Defense or federal agencies
Work Environment
This position operates in a hybrid mode, allowing remote work with periodic on-site presence required at Fort Eustis, Virginia, or LMI Headquarters in Tysons, Virginia. Limited travel supports planning, integration, and engagement with stakeholders. The role offers flexibility while maintaining alignment with government coordination needs.
