Director of Data Engineering
Role Overview
As Director of Data Engineering, you will lead the design and governance of a modern data platform that powers decision-making at scale. Your work ensures data is trustworthy, accessible, and compliant as the organization grows from startup to enterprise maturity. You'll own the architecture, security, and economic efficiency of data systems, balancing innovation with regulatory responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive data catalog that clarifies data lineage, ownership, and usage across teams.
- Define and enforce data contracts, canonical models, and schema standards to ensure consistency and reliability.
- Implement data quality frameworks and monitoring to detect issues early across pipelines.
- Enable safe self-service analytics by designing intuitive access patterns without compromising security.
- Ensure compliance with privacy regulations including GDPR, CCPA, and SOC2 across all data workflows.
- Collaborate with Legal and Product teams to evaluate compliance risks for new data sources and partnerships.
- Monitor data storage and processing for adherence to contractual and regulatory obligations.
- Drive a security-first mindset—implementing SOC2 controls, role-based access, and PII anonymization—without slowing engineering velocity.
- Build automated policy enforcement mechanisms that support rapid development while maintaining guardrails.
- Guide technical direction for data ingestion, transformation, storage, and serving layers.
- Assess and recommend improvements to tooling and infrastructure to enhance scalability and maintainability.
- Own the financial performance of the data platform—track unit costs, separate storage from compute, and align spending with revenue growth.
- Optimize performance across a hybrid architecture: streaming pipelines, log storage, and GPU-intensive ML workloads.
- Identify inefficiencies quickly, distinguishing waste from strategic investment.
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience designing and operating large-scale data platforms handling terabytes of daily throughput.
- Deep understanding of data governance, compliance frameworks, and privacy-preserving architectures.
- Experience with identity resolution, device graphs, or secure data matching environments.
- Proficiency with data orchestration tools such as Airflow or Dagster.
- Familiarity with the full ML lifecycle and the infrastructure supporting scalable training and deployment.
- Track record managing cloud costs and optimizing resource economics on AWS or GCP.
- Background in regulated data environments, including knowledge of data processing agreements and publisher restrictions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with clean room technologies like Snowflake Data Clean Rooms, AWS Clean Rooms, or LiveRamp Safe Haven.
- Knowledge of MLOps systems including feature stores (Feast, Tecton) and model serving platforms.
- Industry experience in streaming TV, connected TV, or programmatic advertising.
- Leadership in guiding teams through SOC2 certification processes.
