Cala Health is hiring a Firmware Engineer

About the Role

Join a forward-thinking engineering team focused on developing advanced wearable medical devices. As a Senior Firmware Engineer, you'll play a central role in shaping firmware architecture from concept through commercialization, working across the full development stack to deliver reliable, power-efficient solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead firmware design and implementation for new and existing wearable platforms, adapting quickly to evolving technical demands across the system.
  • Collaborate closely with hardware engineers to integrate and debug sensors, wireless modules, and memory systems.
  • Ensure adherence to medical device standards by contributing to design controls, risk assessments, requirements traceability, and validation documentation.
  • Design and execute testing strategies for firmware functionality, performance, and interoperability with hardware components.
  • Optimize embedded algorithms and system behavior for minimal power consumption and efficient resource use.
  • Integrate AI-assisted tools into coding, testing, and documentation workflows to improve development speed and consistency.

Qualifications

Applicants should hold a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline, with at least five years of hands-on firmware experience in wearable or portable devices emphasizing ultra-low-power constraints.

Required experience includes two or more years working under ISO13485-regulated development environments, strong proficiency in C and Python, and practical knowledge of bare-metal programming on ARM Cortex-M series microcontrollers. Familiarity with real-time operating systems such as Zephyr, freeRTOS, or Linux-based RTOS variants is highly valued.

Candidates must demonstrate skill with lab equipment including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and power measurement tools, and show a track record of effective collaboration across engineering, quality, regulatory, and manufacturing functions.

Work Environment

This hybrid role is based in San Mateo, CA, requiring a mix of onsite and remote work. The organization supports an inclusive culture that values diverse perspectives, continuous learning, and equitable hiring practices focused on role-specific competencies.

Compensation is competitive, ranging from $125,000 to $175,000 annually, with additional market-driven incentives. A comprehensive benefits package is provided.
