As a Senior Staff Engineer on the Design Systems team, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the frontend foundation used by a broad user base. You’ll architect and refine a robust system of reusable, accessible UI components, ensuring consistency and quality across all digital experiences. Your work will directly influence how teams build and maintain frontend features, enabling greater efficiency and scalability.
What You’ll Do
- Collaborate closely with designers and engineers to develop and document component libraries using modern web technologies including React, TypeScript, and CSS/Sass.
- Create comprehensive documentation and self-serve resources that empower internal teams to adopt and contribute to the design system.
- Build and maintain tooling that enhances code quality, performance, and accessibility across the frontend ecosystem.
- Enable broader contribution by streamlining workflows and lowering barriers for engineers across the organization.
- Work across functional boundaries to ensure modular, responsive, and inclusive user interfaces.
- Explore and integrate AI-driven approaches to improve component development, documentation, and system scalability.
What We’re Looking For
- At least 10 years of hands-on experience in frontend development with deep expertise in JavaScript, TypeScript, React, HTML, and CSS.
- Proven track record of delivering accessible, well-tested, and maintainable UI components.
- Experience translating design mockups into production-ready, responsive code within a collaborative, test-driven environment.
- Strong communication skills and a history of working effectively with cross-functional teams, especially design and product.
- Familiarity with testing frameworks and validation strategies across unit, integration, and end-to-end levels.
- Passion for building inclusive digital experiences that serve diverse user needs.
Preferred Background
- Knowledge of modern styling approaches such as CSS Modules, CSS-in-JS, and Sass.
- Experience with established component libraries like Material UI, Carbon, Polaris, or Lightning.
- Familiarity with accessibility auditing tools like axe and observability practices including RUM and synthetic testing.
- Interest in or experience with AI applications such as MCPs and prompting in frontend contexts.
Work Environment
This role operates in a hybrid model, with team members expected to work from designated office locations 2–3 days per week. Remote work is supported with a secure and reliable internet connection. Compensation & Benefits
The base salary for this position in San Francisco ranges from $225,000 to $275,000 annually, with additional stock equity offered as part of the total compensation package. Final compensation is determined by experience, expertise, and other relevant factors.
