Role Overview
The Headend Engineer plays a key role in maintaining the integrity and efficiency of the organization’s broadcast and signal distribution infrastructure. This position is responsible for ensuring seamless operation of headend systems that deliver services to customers, with a strong emphasis on reliability, performance, and forward-looking technical planning.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and apply strategies to enhance system performance and ensure consistent uptime across headend platforms
- Schedule and carry out maintenance, equipment refreshes, and technology upgrades to keep systems current and resilient
- Diagnose and resolve technical faults quickly to reduce service outages and customer impact
- Track and analyze system capacity to support future network growth and changing service demands
- Conduct routine audits of network assets to verify resource availability and alignment with operational needs
- Oversee daily operations of headend infrastructure, ensuring compliance with technical and industry standards
- Offer technical leadership and mentorship to support teams during complex incident resolution
- Lead integration and deployment of new hardware and software components in coordination with network requirements
- Perform regular system reviews to identify optimization opportunities and implement corrective actions
- Respond to critical incidents as part of an on-call rotation, taking decisive steps to restore functionality
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications, or a related technical discipline
- Proven background in managing headend systems within a telecommunications or broadcast environment
- Deep understanding of RF technologies, IP networking, multicast and unicast protocols, and signal encoding methods
- Experience working with cable distribution architectures and headend-specific hardware
- Proficiency in scripting with Python, Bash, or PowerShell for automation and system management
- Knowledge of regulatory standards and best practices in broadcast and network operations
- Strong analytical abilities to troubleshoot complex technical challenges
- Leadership capabilities with effective communication skills for cross-team collaboration
- Ability to manage priorities under pressure and meet critical deadlines
- Detail-focused approach to documentation, procedures, and system accuracy
- Adaptable mindset with initiative to anticipate and respond to evolving technical needs
Technology Environment
Engineers in this role work extensively with headend platforms, RF and IP signal distribution systems, multicast transport, encoding solutions, and automation tools. Scripting in Python, Bash, and PowerShell is used regularly to streamline operations and improve system responsiveness.
