Role Overview
This position is for a Principal Network Design Engineer specializing in Cisco technologies, responsible for the architecture, implementation, and ongoing support of mission-critical corporate networks. The role centers on Cisco ISE, ASA, Umbrella, and SD-WAN solutions, ensuring secure, scalable, and resilient network infrastructure that meets strict performance and availability standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary technical liaison between customers, internal engineering teams, and operations for the Corporate LAN Network.
- Lead the design and deployment of secure network architectures, including SD-WAN integration and firewall configurations using Cisco ASA.
- Respond to and resolve escalated network incidents reported through NOC or service desks, ensuring timely resolution in line with SLAs and KPIs.
- Monitor network performance to proactively identify risks, prevent outages, and recommend optimization strategies.
- Support network migrations, upgrades, and configuration changes by developing and executing detailed methods of procedure (MOPs).
- Document service requests, incidents, and solutions within the Remedy system to maintain auditability and service continuity.
- Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation to deliver remote support outside standard business hours when required.
- Conduct trend analysis on network events to detect recurring issues and support proactive problem management.
- Collaborate with vendors and internal teams to escalate and resolve product defects or configuration anomalies.
- Prepare technical reports and deliver management updates on network health, project progress, and risk mitigation.
- Attend customer and supplier meetings to align technical delivery with business expectations and build trust.
- Support special projects and process improvements as directed, contributing to professional development and operational excellence.
Required Expertise
Candidates must demonstrate strong technical proficiency in:
- Cisco ISE, ASA, Umbrella, and Meraki platforms
- Routing protocols, MPLS, VPN, and IPv4/IPv6 network design
- Network security principles and infrastructure management
- Firmware maintenance and system upgrades
- SD-WAN deployment and operational support
- Use of network monitoring and management tools to analyze performance and troubleshoot issues
Work Environment
This is a hybrid role based in Quinton (Birmingham), with flexibility for remote out-of-hours support. The position requires occasional site visits to Tier 1 and 2 locations as needed.
