Carbon Direct is hiring a Power Systems Engineer

About the Role

As a Power Systems Engineer, you will play a key role in shaping the future of low-carbon energy systems. Working within a multidisciplinary team of engineers, researchers, and climate experts, you will develop and deploy machine learning models to forecast electricity load, generation, and pricing, with a focus on renewable energy integration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain AI-driven forecasting systems for power generation, demand, and market prices, with emphasis on wind and solar resources
  • Design and evaluate electrical infrastructure solutions that support decarbonization, including grid integration, power electronics, and electrification strategies
  • Support long-term planning efforts involving transmission expansion, resource adequacy, and production cost modeling using tools like PROMOD, Plexos, or AURORA
  • Perform technical assessments of energy storage, industrial electrification projects, and emerging technologies
  • Translate engineering and market analyses into clear, strategic recommendations for both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Collaborate with scientists and policy specialists to deliver client-ready insights and thought leadership content
  • Contribute to technical publications and reports on grid modernization and clean energy transitions
  • Stay informed on evolving power system technologies, regulatory frameworks, and carbon reduction pathways

Qualifications

Applicants should hold a Master’s or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related quantitative discipline. You must bring demonstrated experience in power systems analysis, including AC/DC power flow modeling and familiarity with wholesale electricity markets and grid operations.

  • Proven skills in statistical modeling, forecasting, and data analysis using Python, R, or MATLAB
  • Hands-on experience with production-cost modeling platforms and machine learning deployment in operational settings
  • Strong understanding of ISO/RTO market structures, capacity mechanisms, and reliability standards
  • Excellent communication abilities, with experience presenting technical findings to diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to work effectively across technical and policy domains in fast-paced, collaborative environments

Preferred Experience

  • Modeling of energy storage, EV charging networks, or industrial electrification systems
  • Knowledge of carbon accounting, energy policy, or regulatory proceedings such as those before FERC
  • Background in consulting or climate-focused organizations serving corporate clients
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license or equivalent credentialing
  • Publicly shared technical work related to grid decarbonization or energy innovation
  • Understanding of natural gas and power market interdependencies

Work Environment

This role operates in a hybrid model with team hubs in Seattle, Oakland, and New York City, supported by remote-friendly policies. You’ll benefit from flexible work arrangements, a stipend for home office setup, and a monthly remote work allowance. The organization prioritizes inclusivity, technical excellence, and urgent climate action, fostering a culture where diverse perspectives drive innovation.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary ranges from $133,000 to $195,000 annually, with additional opportunities for equity participation. Benefits include comprehensive health coverage, flexible vacation, 16 weeks of fully paid parental leave, company-wide holidays, and annual retreats. The company is committed to equal opportunity employment and does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or veteran status.
