ethoslife is hiring a Principal Design Systems Designer

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate current product interfaces and design materials to pinpoint key areas for standardization, consolidation, and reduction of inconsistencies.
  • Establish a clear information architecture for the design system, including naming conventions, taxonomy, component hierarchy, and documentation layout, to support both human and AI navigation and usage.
  • Collaborate with design, engineering, and leadership teams to develop a prioritized, actionable roadmap that balances immediate product demands with long-term scalability.
  • Develop and implement a scalable design token strategy covering color, typography, spacing, elevation, and motion, with a synchronized pipeline across Figma, code, and Storybook.
  • Work closely with front-end developers to convert design system elements into reusable, well-structured components with intuitive APIs, proper states, and built-in accessibility features.
  • Manage the full lifecycle of components, including version control, release documentation, deprecation planning, and cross-team handoffs.
  • Design a low-friction contribution process that enables designers, engineers, and product managers to propose, review, and integrate new components without excessive oversight.
  • Produce practical, widely adopted documentation with usage guidelines, examples, decision rationales, and structured formats that are accessible to both people and AI agents.
  • Lead adoption efforts by focusing on high-impact areas, shipping improvements incrementally, and demonstrating tangible product enhancements.
  • Determine how AI agents can assist in auditing, tagging, and maintaining system integrity, and define where human oversight is required for decisions like naming, deprecations, and new patterns.
  • Shape the development pipeline that transforms Figma designs or product prompts into validated Storybook components using AI tools, with quality control checkpoints for consistency, accessibility, and brand alignment.
  • Ensure the design system is interpretable by AI by structuring components, tokens, and patterns with clear naming and documentation so that automated outputs are production-ready.
  • Define measurable success criteria and monitor key metrics such as adoption rates, UI consistency, design and development speed, accessibility gains, and AI output quality.
  • Collaborate with Research and Data teams when applicable to link design system updates to measurable product outcomes like quality, user trust, and conversion efficiency.
