Kano is hiring a Principal Engineer (P4 Software Developer)

About the Role

As a Principal Engineer, you will provide strategic direction for complex software systems, ensuring long-term maintainability, performance, and security. You'll define architectural standards, lead high-impact initiatives, and serve as a technical authority across engineering teams.

What You'll Do

  • Establish and drive programs that elevate code quality, system performance, and delivery efficiency across the organization
  • Take ownership of security and privacy compliance, ensuring alignment with evolving platform requirements
  • Lead operations strategy by defining service level objectives, managing error budgets, and improving incident response processes
  • Design and implement comprehensive observability solutions using logs, metrics, traces, and real-time monitoring tools
  • Enhance developer workflows through improvements to CI/CD pipelines, branching models, and automated quality controls
  • Manage cloud spending and optimize infrastructure efficiency through FinOps practices
  • Act as incident commander during critical outages and lead post-mortem reviews to prevent recurrence
  • Mentor senior engineers and tech leads, fostering strong technical decision-making and ownership
  • Collaborate with product, legal, finance, and support teams to align technical roadmaps with business objectives
  • Apply AI tools to accelerate development cycles, testing, and operational troubleshooting
  • Oversee the process for R&D tax credit claims with proper documentation and audit readiness

Requirements

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years in a principal or lead architecture role
  • Proven track record with highly available, high-volume consumer-facing systems
  • Deep knowledge of AWS services including IAM, VPC, EC2/ECS/Fargate, S3, KMS, and security monitoring tools
  • Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code platforms such as Terraform or CDK
  • Experience with CI/CD systems like GitHub Actions or similar tooling
  • Direct experience owning security and privacy in regulated environments
  • Strong background in SRE principles, including SLO management and performance testing
  • Familiarity with both relational and non-relational data architectures
  • Hands-on experience with observability stacks such as Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, OpenTelemetry, or Sentry
  • Real-world application of AI in software development or operations
  • Ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders across departments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Unity, HTML5, JavaScript, or PHP in game or interactive platforms
  • Prior involvement in FinOps initiatives or vendor cost negotiations
  • Background managing SRED or comparable R&D incentive programs
  • Operational experience with MongoDB or MySQL
