Chime is hiring a Principal Software Engineer

About the Role

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will be central to defining the technological foundation of a growing primary care platform designed to serve high-need communities. This role offers the chance to shape core architecture from the ground up, making key decisions that influence system design, security, scalability, and the integration of artificial intelligence across engineering workflows.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and guide the platform’s architectural direction, focusing on event-driven design, service boundaries, performance, and long-term scalability.
  • Lead the strategy for AI adoption in software development, including AI-powered coding tools, automated testing, and pipeline optimization.
  • Make foundational decisions on technology selection, service architecture, and infrastructure planning for new systems.
  • Champion security across application, network, and infrastructure layers, implementing secure coding standards, OWASP guidelines, and integrating DAST, SCA, and SAST tooling.
  • Collaborate with product teams to define MVP scope, implement monitoring, and assess feature impact and ROI.
  • Improve development lifecycle practices, including CI/CD pipelines, testing rigor, code quality, observability, and developer experience enhanced by AI tools.
  • Support engineering recruitment by helping design evaluation processes that assess readiness for modern development practices and AI integration.
  • Promote a culture of learning, collaboration, and continuous technical improvement across teams.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, with a strong background in building scalable systems across web, mobile, and backend environments. Deep knowledge of cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, microservices, and event-driven architectures is essential. Experience in healthcare settings is required, including understanding of HIPAA, protected health information (PHI), and technical aspects of EHR or health plan data integration. Familiarity with security best practices—such as OWASP principles and automated testing tools—is critical. You must also have a proven ability to lead technical initiatives, influence product strategy, and communicate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred Experience

  • Designing or integrating AI/ML features such as predictive models, workflow automation, or retrieval-augmented systems.
  • Applying AI tools within software development processes, including code generation and test automation.
  • Driving system-wide improvements that align technical innovation with business goals.

Technology Environment

The platform leverages event-driven architectures, microservices, distributed systems, and cloud-native infrastructure. Development workflows include robust CI/CD pipelines, automated security testing (DAST, SCA, SAST), observability practices, and AI-enhanced developer tooling. Systems are designed to meet HIPAA requirements and support integrations with electronic health records and health plan data exchanges.

Compensation and Benefits

This position offers a salary range of $190,000 to $210,000, along with an equity compensation package. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, a 401k plan, and flexible paid time off. A $1,000 home office stipend is provided, and all necessary equipment will be supplied. The role supports full-time remote work anywhere in the U.S., with opportunities for career advancement and professional development.

Work Environment

This is a fully remote position available to candidates within the United States. The organization values diversity, inclusion, and equitable practices, fostering innovation through a range of perspectives and experiences. Employment decisions are made without regard to race, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, veteran status, or disability.
