Thomson Reuters Foundation is hiring a Senior Applied Scientist

About the Role

Shape the future of intelligent research systems by leading end-to-end development of AI models that power critical legal and professional information platforms. In this role, you will design and deploy solutions in natural language processing, information retrieval, and generative AI, translating complex user needs into scalable technical implementations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead full lifecycle model development—from research and data preparation to evaluation and deployment—while mentoring others in best practices.
  • Work iteratively in agile sprints, prioritizing customer feedback to refine AI capabilities and deliver tangible value quickly.
  • Define technical requirements by partnering with stakeholders across product, engineering, and business functions.
  • Ensure robust ML Ops practices, including model monitoring, performance evaluation, and retraining pipelines, in collaboration with engineering teams.
  • Drive innovation by publishing research findings and developing patentable technologies that strengthen product differentiation.

Qualifications

Candidates should hold a PhD in a relevant field or a Master’s with equivalent experience, along with a proven track record in commercial AI applications. Required experience includes:

  • Five or more years building information retrieval or NLP systems for production environments.
  • Two years developing customer-facing generative AI products.
  • One year implementing agentic AI workflows.
  • Proven ability to write production-grade code and deliver software effectively in cross-functional teams.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills, with a history of turning complex challenges into working AI solutions.

Preferred Background

Publications in top-tier conferences such as ACL, EMNLP, NeurIPS, SIGIR, or KDD are highly valued. Experience co-designing ML systems with engineering teams and delivering customer-driven AI features in agile settings is a strong plus.

Work Environment & Benefits

This role supports flexible work arrangements, including the ability to work remotely for up to eight weeks per year. The company promotes work-life balance through inclusive policies and wellness resources, including mental health days, flexible vacation, and access to mindfulness tools like Headspace.

Additional benefits include retirement planning with company match, tuition reimbursement, health and wellness programs, parental leave, sabbatical options, and opportunities for pro-bono and ESG-related projects. Comprehensive insurance coverage, commuter benefits, and employee stock purchase options are also available.

Compensation

Base salary ranges from $137,100 to $254,700 USD, with an annual bonus tied to both company and individual performance. Equity may be offered based on qualifications and experience.
