Role Overview
This position leads the design, maintenance, and optimization of enterprise-grade database systems with a focus on DB2 running on z/OS. The engineer ensures high availability, performance efficiency, and alignment with global operational standards. This role combines deep technical expertise with leadership responsibilities, guiding both infrastructure improvements and team development.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and enforce database management standards for deployment, patching, performance tuning, and application integration.
- Develop and maintain robust backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies to support business continuity.
- Analyze and refine business continuity processes, ensuring alignment with evolving operational needs.
- Establish documentation practices that enhance knowledge sharing and operational consistency across teams.
- Advise on advanced database features including replication, security controls, clustering, and data partitioning.
- Evaluate emerging DBMS capabilities and recommend practical implementations to improve system performance.
- Create standardized workflows with an emphasis on automation, compliance, and long-term maintainability.
- Support 24x7 operations as part of a collaborative team, responding to critical system events as needed.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex database issues, leading root cause analysis and driving permanent fixes.
- Coordinate with DBMS vendors through ticketing systems, guiding internal teams to effective resolutions.
- Identify systemic issues across the data ecosystem and lead cross-platform remediation efforts.
- Design automated solutions for operational monitoring, auditing, and event response.
- Set coding standards for shell scripting and develop reusable, efficient scripts to streamline operations.
- Provide technical mentorship to junior staff and contribute to team-wide skill development.
- Lead database design initiatives for high-performance applications in coordination with engineering teams.
- Deliver performance tuning and capacity planning insights across platforms and value streams.
- Collaborate with networking, storage, systems, and application teams to optimize end-to-end system performance.
Required Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent professional experience.
- 7–10 years of hands-on database administration in production environments.
- Proven experience across multiple operating systems, including z/OS, Linux, Windows, and Exadata platforms.
- Strong understanding of database architecture, storage systems (SAN, NAS, SMS), network protocols (TCP/IP, LAN, WAN), and virtualized or cloud environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with mainframe security tools such as RACF, ACF2, or Top Secret, and monitoring solutions like Omegamon or RMF.
- Familiarity with enterprise agility frameworks such as SAFe or DevOps practices.
- Working knowledge of CICS, COBOL, Assembler, or Java in transactional systems.
Technical Environment
The role operates within a complex ecosystem featuring DB2 on z/OS, SQL, Active Directory, shell scripting (REXX, Bash), and integration with enterprise applications. Proficiency in system monitoring tools (Sysview, RMF) and directory services is essential. Microsoft Office is used for documentation and reporting.
Work Environment
This is a remote position open to candidates in the United States, offering full flexibility to work from home. The role may require occasional coordination across time zones to support global operations.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary range: $119,837.49 – $191,735.98. The position is eligible for a performance-based bonus.
