Renesas Electronics is hiring a Senior Firmware Verification Engineer

About the Role

Role Overview

Our Infrastructure Power team is looking for a Senior Firmware Verification Engineer based in Austin, TX, to ensure the reliability and performance of embedded firmware in high-efficiency power management integrated circuits. These components are critical to data centers, AI accelerators, networking systems, and advanced computing platforms. You will play a central role in both pre-silicon and post-silicon validation, verifying firmware behavior and its interaction with hardware at the register and system levels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain SystemVerilog-based test environments to validate firmware execution and firmware-to-hardware communication.
  • Execute simulation campaigns and analyze results using RTL and emulation platforms to uncover functional and timing issues before silicon fabrication.
  • Support lab validation after silicon availability, including bring-up, feature testing, and electrical characterization of PMIC firmware.
  • Collaborate with firmware engineers to debug control algorithms, power sequencing logic, telemetry systems, and protection mechanisms.
  • Develop automation scripts in Python or Perl to manage regression testing and streamline lab measurement workflows.
  • Use oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and power supplies to validate real-world behavior and isolate firmware or interface defects.
  • Document verification strategies, test plans, and results to ensure traceability and compliance with design requirements.
  • Work closely with design, firmware, and systems teams to resolve issues identified during internal testing or customer evaluations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • At least five years of hands-on experience in firmware verification, particularly in pre-silicon environments.
  • Proven experience creating or working within SystemVerilog testbenches.
  • Familiarity with digital hardware design and RTL-level debugging.
  • Strong programming background in C for embedded applications.
  • Proficiency in Python or Perl for test automation and data processing.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze complex system behaviors.
  • Clear and effective communication skills, both written and verbal.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with UVM or other structured verification methodologies.
  • Background working with ARM Cortex-M based microcontrollers.
  • Exposure to FPGA-based emulation or QEMU for firmware testing.
  • Hands-on use of debug tools such as SimVision, Verdi, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of serial communication protocols including I2C, PMBus, and SPI.
  • Understanding of voltage regulation, control loop dynamics, and power sequencing in embedded systems.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines for automated firmware or simulation testing.

Work Environment

This role operates under a hybrid model with the primary location in Austin, TX. Team members are expected to be in the office Tuesday through Thursday to support collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing. Remote work is permitted for the remainder of the week. The environment emphasizes flexibility, inclusion, and continuous professional growth.

Company Values

  • Driving innovation to simplify technology and improve everyday life.
  • Championing diversity, equity, and inclusion across all teams.
  • Putting people first—supporting employee wellbeing and development.
  • Promoting sustainability in products and operations.
  • Encouraging collaboration and lifelong learning.
