About the Role

Role Overview

As a Senior Backend Software Engineer, you will lead the design, implementation, and optimization of scalable backend systems that power next-generation educational technology. Your work will directly support AI-enhanced learning experiences, integrating Large Language Models and cloud-based services into reliable, high-performance applications serving students and educators.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead development efforts across the full software lifecycle, from design and implementation to testing and deployment
  • Write maintainable, efficient code to ensure system reliability and performance
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver timely, high-quality software solutions
  • Optimize backend services for speed, scalability, and resilience
  • Design and refine data models and API architectures to support evolving product needs

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field
  • Minimum of 7 years of backend engineering experience using Ruby, Ruby on Rails, or Python with JavaScript
  • Proven expertise in software architecture, including database design and RESTful API development
  • Strong grasp of LLMs, LLM APIs, and their practical integration into applications
  • Deep understanding of web protocols, networking, and browser behavior
  • Proficiency with *nix environments and command-line tools
  • Advanced SQL skills and experience with relational schema design
  • Extensive experience using git and GitHub for version control and collaboration
  • Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively across teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in full-stack or backend development with AI tooling and MLOps pipelines
  • Familiarity with LLM evaluation frameworks and model monitoring practices
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services such as SageMaker, AWS Polly, or Azure Speech Service
  • Background working with Postgres, Redis, Elasticsearch, and MySQL
  • Track record deploying high-traffic applications in AWS or similar cloud platforms
  • Strong architectural instincts for building systems that scale efficiently
  • Ruby development experience is highly valued
  • Industry experience in education technology, language learning, or academic software
  • Knowledge of WCAG 2.1 AA standards and accessibility best practices

Technology Environment

Our stack includes Ruby, Rails, JavaScript, Vue, MySQL, Postgres, Redis, Elasticsearch, and AWS-based infrastructure.

Work Model

This role operates in a hybrid format, requiring presence in the Boston office on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Remote work is supported for candidates residing in the Eastern US Time Zone. All applicants must be based in the United States.

Compensation & Benefits

The annual base salary range for this position is $140,000 to $150,000. Additional compensation may include an annual performance-based incentive. Equity is not included in this package.
