Boulder, United States of America Remote (Global) $44,500 - $71,200

National Renewable Energy Laboratory is hiring an Undergraduate/Graduate (3-12 Month, Remote) Intern - Power System/Power Electronics Modeling

About the Role

The Power Systems Engineering Center is looking for one or two motivated students to contribute to ongoing research in power system dynamics and control. This remote internship, lasting between 3 and 12 months, offers hands-on experience in modeling and validating modern grid systems with significant renewable integration.

What You'll Do

  • Conduct technical assessments of power electronics controls in renewable generation, battery storage, and industrial power systems.
  • Develop and run electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations using PSCAD under guidance from senior engineers.
  • Incorporate and validate user-developed 'black box' models for wind turbines, solar inverters, and battery systems.
  • Analyze how high concentrations of inverter-based generation affect overall grid performance and stability.
  • Document findings and support the preparation of technical reports and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Adhere to safety and compliance standards throughout all project activities.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a foundational understanding of power system stability and control theory. Experience with PSCAD and EMT simulation tools is essential. This opportunity is open to current undergraduate or graduate students in electrical engineering or a closely related discipline.

Work Environment

This position is fully remote, allowing participation from any location. The internship duration ranges from 3 to 12 months, depending on project needs and academic schedules.
