Join a forward-thinking team as an IT Systems Engineer with a strong emphasis on cybersecurity. Based in Melbourne or Adelaide, you’ll play a central role in managing and securing critical infrastructure, with a focus on the Microsoft stack and cloud environments. This is a highly autonomous position within a flexible, primarily remote workplace, supported by local office resources.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and optimise the Microsoft ecosystem, including Windows Server, Active Directory, and Microsoft 365 services.
- Enhance identity security through Microsoft Entra ID in hybrid setups, managing Conditional Access, SSO integrations, and identity controls.
- Lead cybersecurity improvements, including vulnerability management, system hardening, Essential Eight compliance, and Microsoft Defender configuration.
- Support the deployment and operational use of Microsoft Sentinel, including integrating data sources and refining alert logic.
- Design, manage, and scale Azure IaaS and PaaS environments to meet the needs of a growing national team.
- Serve as the top-tier escalation point for complex issues involving servers, identity, networking, and endpoints.
- Maintain network security through firewall management, site-to-site and remote access VPNs, and improved segmentation.
- Develop and maintain advanced PowerShell scripts to automate infrastructure tasks and ensure consistency.
- Support and refine the Standard Operating Environment, server build standards, and operational procedures.
- Monitor and maintain a mixed OS environment, including internal SUSE Linux systems.
- Improve backup, monitoring, and operational reliability practices across platforms.
- Lead technical upgrades from planning through to documentation, stakeholder communication, and handover.
- Produce clear technical documentation, architecture diagrams, and operational runbooks.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to deliver infrastructure changes.
- Coach junior team members through knowledge sharing, pairing sessions, and hands-on guidance.
- Support compliance initiatives for ISO 27001 and SOC 2 through secure configurations and disciplined operations.
Qualifications
You bring at least four years of experience in systems engineering or infrastructure administration, with deep technical knowledge of Windows Server, Azure, Microsoft 365, and hybrid Entra ID environments. You have a proven ability to automate workflows using PowerShell or Power Automate and a strong track record in cybersecurity practices such as patching, hardening, and identity protection. Experience with firewall systems like Sophos, networking fundamentals, and Linux administration—particularly SUSE—is essential. You’re skilled at delivering complex technical projects from start to finish and producing high-quality documentation. Strong communication and mentoring abilities are key, as you’ll be guiding team members and collaborating across functions.
Preferred Experience
Hands-on work with the ASD Essential Eight framework is highly valued. Familiarity with ISO 27001 or SOC 2 compliance processes will strengthen your application.
