Sargent & Lundy is hiring a Senior Transmission Line Engineer 2 - Grid

About the Role

This role focuses on the engineering design and analysis of overhead transmission lines ranging from 69kV to 500kV. The engineer will lead technical efforts in developing design criteria, conductor selection, grounding and shielding studies, and routing assessments. A key responsibility is guiding small teams through project execution while ensuring accuracy and compliance with industry codes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design transmission line systems and review structural and electrical performance using engineering models
  • Conduct cost analyses and prepare estimates for project planning and proposals
  • Develop and verify design documentation, including plans, profiles, and technical specifications
  • Lead routing and siting evaluations, considering right-of-way and environmental constraints
  • Perform conductor sag and tension reviews, grounding studies, and induction assessments
  • Collaborate with clients, vendors, and construction teams to align design with field requirements
  • Supervise junior engineers and provide technical mentorship
  • Drive process improvements by automating engineering calculations and documentation workflows
  • Guide the responsible use of AI and scripting tools such as Python, MATLAB, and advanced Excel
  • Review automated outputs to ensure technical validity and reliability

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program and have at least seven years of experience in transmission line engineering. Proficiency in PLS-CADD is required, along with familiarity with relevant standards including NESC, IEEE, ASCE 7, and AISC. Strong communication skills and attention to detail are essential.

Preferred qualifications include a Professional Engineer (PE) license or eligibility to obtain one within one year, experience with ArcGIS, AutoCAD, or MicroStation, and background in computer science or software development. Experience in writing proposals and managing project schedules is also valued.

Work Environment

This position operates on a hybrid basis, combining in-office collaboration with remote work. Occasional travel may be required for site visits or client meetings.
