Role Overview
As the Shopify Architect/Lead Developer, you will shape the technical direction of headless commerce implementations using Shopify Hydrogen. You'll take ownership of frontend architecture, lead development efforts, and ensure that storefronts are built for performance, scalability, and business impact. Working closely with design, product, and backend teams, you'll translate requirements into robust technical solutions while guiding junior developers and enforcing best practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement end-to-end architecture for Shopify Hydrogen-based storefronts
- Establish coding standards, component patterns, and development workflows for headless Shopify projects
- Make strategic decisions on performance, caching, SSR streaming, and edge deployment
- Conduct code reviews, lead pair programming sessions, and provide technical mentorship
- Collaborate with UX designers to build responsive, accessible interfaces from design prototypes
- Integrate Shopify Storefront and Admin APIs using GraphQL, including webhook handling via backend services
- Develop and deploy custom Shopify Functions for discounts, cart logic, and delivery rules
- Optimize core web vitals including LCP, CLS, and TTFB through targeted performance improvements
- Integrate third-party systems such as CMS platforms, analytics, personalization engines, and payment gateways
- Participate in sprint planning, estimation, and delivery coordination across cross-functional teams
- Support production deployments, QA cycles, and post-launch issue resolution
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years in frontend or full-stack development, with at least 2 years focused on Shopify
- Proven experience shipping production applications using Shopify Hydrogen
- Deep knowledge of React, TypeScript, Vite, and modern SSR techniques
- Strong grasp of headless commerce patterns and GraphQL implementation
- Experience securing Admin API integrations through middleware services
- Familiarity with Oxygen runtime and edge computing concepts
- Proficiency with code quality tools like ESLint and Prettier, and CI/CD pipelines
- Track record of leading small development teams or mentoring peers
- Ability to communicate technical trade-offs clearly to non-technical stakeholders
- Demonstrated ownership of complex features from design to deployment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience migrating Liquid themes to Hydrogen-based storefronts
- Working knowledge of Shopify Plus capabilities and enterprise workflows
- Integration experience with CMS platforms such as Sanity, Contentful, or Builder.io
- Familiarity with A/B testing and analytics tools in eCommerce contexts
- Background in large-scale performance optimization for high-traffic stores

Work Model
This is a hybrid role requiring residency in the Eastern or Central time zone, or availability to work during EST hours. You may choose to work remotely or from an office location. The team operates across EST and CST zones with flexible scheduling within core collaboration hours.

Compensation
Base salary range: $100,000 to $165,000. Includes 401K matching and monthly remote work stipend. Equity details are not disclosed at this time.
