As a Staff Software Engineer, Backend, you will begin by leading technical initiatives through hands-on coding, serving as tech lead for the first six months. Following this period, you will transition into a leadership role with direct reports, while continuing to contribute meaningfully as an individual contributor—spending at least 25% of your time writing and reviewing code.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement high-performance, distributed backend services using Golang and gRPC to support international growth
- Lead architectural discussions and help shape engineering standards across teams
- Collaborate with Product and Engineering counterparts to deliver reliable, multi-tenant systems at scale
- Guide the evolution of complex systems, including decomposing monolithic architectures into scalable microservices
- Mentor engineers in best practices for system design, testing, and code quality
- Contribute to strategic product planning in alignment with global expansion goals
- Ensure engineering excellence through robust processes, peer reviews, and operational discipline
Qualifications
Applicants should have over eight years of software engineering experience, with a history of solving complex, open-ended technical challenges. A strong commitment to advancing an open financial system is essential. Experience in high-growth environments—from small teams scaling to hundreds of engineers—is highly valued.
Preferred candidates will have worked with blockchain technologies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, engaged with decentralized applications, and have familiarity with onchain interactions like managing Ethereum addresses or using ENS. Experience with Golang, Protobuf, Docker, MongoDB, Postgres, and AWS is a strong plus, as is background in financial infrastructure, security-critical systems, or large-scale service decomposition.
Work Environment
This is a hybrid role based in the Americas (excluding the US), operating in a remote-first model with required in-person participation. Team members must be available for periodic on-site gatherings, including mandatory company and team offsites held multiple times each year.

Compensation & Benefits
The annual base salary for this role is $217,900 CAD. Additional compensation includes bonus eligibility. Benefits cover medical, dental, and vision plans.
