About the Role

Substrakt is looking for a Backend Engineer to build robust, high-quality backend solutions that power our clients' websites and digital products. As part of our purpose-driven, B-corp accredited team, you'll work on a diverse range of projects from new builds and updates to API integrations and infrastructure configurations.

What You'll Do

  • Create backend solutions using technologies like PHP, WordPress, MySQL, SQL, Python, and Wagtail with performance, security, and scalability in mind.
  • Write clean, efficient, and secure code following best practices, test thoroughly, debug issues, and optimize performance.
  • Work closely with frontend engineers, designers, and client-facing roles to ensure smooth delivery and communicate directly with clients when needed.
  • Take responsibility for technical quality, contribute to internal best practices, and help shape future backend engineering processes.

What We're Looking For

  • Strong experience in backend development using modern frameworks and tools (e.g., PHP, Python, WordPress, Wagtail, Django).
  • Familiarity with relational databases (MySQL) and cloud infrastructure (Heroku, AWS, Cloudflare).
  • Understanding of performance optimization, secure coding practices, and scalable system design.
  • Enthusiasm for working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • A friendly and helpful approach to communicating directly with clients.
  • Initiative, problem-solving mindset, and a drive to deliver high-quality work.
  • Openness to learn, share knowledge, and support others.

  • Languages/Frameworks: PHP, Python, WordPress, Wagtail, Django, SQL
  • Databases: MySQL
  • Infrastructure/Cloud: Heroku, AWS (S3, CloudFront, RDS), Cloudflare

Team & Environment

You'll be part of the Engineering team, collaborating closely with frontend engineers, designers, and client-facing roles.
