Role Overview
Join a team responsible for maintaining the reliability and efficiency of globally distributed database systems. In this role, you'll oversee production databases across cloud platforms, ensuring optimal performance, security, and resilience for enterprise workloads.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and tune production databases including Couchbase, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, DocumentDB, Cosmos DB, and Snowflake across AWS and Azure environments.
- Configure and monitor Couchbase clusters, including cross-datacenter replication (XDCR) and performance optimization.
- Perform database deployments, upgrades, patching, and configuration management in both cloud and on-premises setups.
- Monitor system health, resource usage, and performance metrics across multi-cloud infrastructures.
- Improve query efficiency through indexing, execution plan analysis, and tuning of database-specific languages like N1QL.
- Design and implement scaling strategies such as sharding, vertical scaling, and capacity forecasting.
- Enforce database security policies, including encryption, access controls, and compliance with data privacy standards.
- Develop and test backup and recovery solutions with defined retention, RTO, and RPO targets.
- Support disaster recovery readiness through regular testing and documentation of recovery procedures.
- Participate in on-call rotations to respond to critical incidents and lead resolution efforts.
- Diagnose complex issues such as replication delays, connection bottlenecks, and memory constraints.
- Use monitoring tools like Datadog, CloudWatch, and Azure Monitor to build dashboards and configure intelligent alerting.
- Automate routine tasks using Python, Bash, PowerShell, and cloud-native CLIs.
- Lead database migration projects between platforms and cloud providers with minimal service disruption.
- Ensure data integrity during migrations and support new database implementations.
- Document system configurations, runbooks, and architectural decisions.
- Collaborate with engineering teams on security practices, including IAM policies, network segmentation, and secrets management.
- Support audits and remediate vulnerabilities in coordination with security teams.
- Advise development teams on database design and performance best practices.
- Contribute to technical reviews and mentor junior database engineers.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of five years managing production databases at scale.
- Hands-on experience with AWS database services such as RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, DocumentDB, and AWS Backup.
- Proven work with Couchbase, including cluster operations, replication, and query optimization.
- Familiarity with Azure database offerings like Cosmos DB and Azure PostgreSQL.
- Experience supporting globally distributed, multi-region database systems.
- Solid understanding of indexing, query optimization, and database internals.
- Proficiency in SQL and database-specific query languages.
- Experience designing and validating backup, restore, and disaster recovery strategies.
- Working knowledge of monitoring platforms including Datadog, CloudWatch, and Azure Monitor.
- Scripting skills in Python, Bash, or PowerShell for automation.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform or CloudFormation.
- Strong grasp of database security, encryption, IAM, and regulatory compliance.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot under pressure and resolve high-severity incidents.
- Willingness to participate in a 24/7 on-call schedule.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent practical experience.
- Cloud or database certifications such as AWS Database Specialty, AWS Solutions Architect, Azure Database Administrator, or Couchbase certifications.
- Experience with Snowflake administration and optimization.
- Background using migration tools like AWS DMS or Azure Data Migration Service.
- Familiarity with change data capture (CDC) and streaming platforms such as Kafka, Kinesis, or Debezium.
